About STT

Shift the Timber currently runs in Essex on behalf of the Thurrock County Council. Provding weight loss for men. The men have presented us with 100% waist loss, gains in fitness and reductions in muscle loss. We currently have over 30 men attending our 2 hours of moderate to vigorous exercise per week.

It’s not just a kickabout. Our coaches are UEFA’B’ / FA Level 3 qualified coaches or hold a degree in a related field and so we provide specific skills training alongside prescribed physical activity in order to maximise fitness and to reduce sarcopenia.

Our sessions run on Mondays and Thursdays in Thurrock.

STT women started in January 2020 and has been going well with significant weight and waist loss over the group. Football skills development has been developing and the women are now up to a full 60 minutes of exercise per week.

STT Brighton started in the new year and we’re seeing excellent results. We’re working in partnership with Brighton Council and Impulse Leisure to bring our wonderful programme to the south coast.

STT Hertfordshire

We ran Shift the Timber (Formerly the Alpha programme) in Hertfordshire. Our programme lasted for 3 years and supported 92 men.

Our research component (for Mark’s PhD) lasted for 88 weeks and achieved significant weight loss for all participants during this period. It was 3 years of hard work, but during this time we honed our skills in supporting hard to reach groups, in particular men.

Over 90% of the men we supported came from a sedentary background. We’re still in touch with many of our ex-colleagues. Weight maintenance still persists and they continue to train.

Mark Cortnage

Is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Anglia Ruskin University. He holds an MSc in International Public Health Nutrition and a BSc (Hons) in Human Nutrition. He also holds a PGCert in Higher Education and a National certificate in Sports Studies and is a qualified personal trainer.

He developed a specialist food programme (football and nutrition for men) that has no calorie counting, calorie deficit or portion control. 4 years of research has proven long term weight loss and maintenance is possible.

Steve Morgan

Steve has been a professional coach for over 20 years, firstly specialising in Football. He gained his UEFA’B’ / FA Level 3 at the age of 21 after a career ending injury and lived in USA for the first 8 years of his coaching career.

Steve progressed on to Primary and Secondary school National Curriculum based sports coaching, creating a business that assists in the development, wellbeing and physical activity to over 2000 children per week in London and surrounding counties.

Steve’s skills are in leadership and engagement. He has played a pivotal role in STT, developing male engagement, motivation and self-efficacy.
